Keep Your Eyes Closed, My Darling

Close your eyes,
Listen
To your heartbeat
I do not expect you to tune out your thoughts
I think that is impossible,
Or I would not write so much.
Eyes closed
I see
A hearth,
Old fashioned,
The center of
A well loved cottage.
Stone mantle.
Plaster walls.
Leaded windows,
You know, the ones with
The pattern
That forms diamonds? The fire
In the hearth
Burns hot,
A home.
Maybe it is peacefully quiet.
Maybe music plays
From the
Thrifted
Record player.
Something old,
Before our time,
But bringing back
Fond memories
Of what once was.
Maybe there is a dog,
Loyal, soft, silly,
Loves to run
In the fields outside.
We feed her
The best food
Money can buy because animals
Keep our hearts happier
Than words
Describe.
I am curled up on the sofa
Wearing
Slippers.
Under a blanket,
Regardless of what
Season it is.
Maybe I am old
Or just older
Than I
Am
Now.
You are there.
Who?
That would be
Like asking
Where the
Cottage is
Or
If it's
A real place.
You are there.
Perhaps I am
Sketching something,
And you sit
In your chair,
Doing your own
Thing,
The dog
Is curled up
In her spot
And we probably
Have chores
But there's always tomorrow.
Keep your eyes
Closed,
My Darling,
And the cottage
With the Hearth
Is our Home
For
As long
As we
Want.
This is currently my favourite, if I had to pick. Some feelings I have can only be captured in words such as these.
